Today you’re getting something new from my blog: A guest post! I had the absolute honor of co-hosting a baby shower for my Instagram-turned-real-life-friend Brittany. She used to be a teacher, and we both love eating and girl time, so we hit it off right away. I am blessed to know her, and can hardly wait to meet her baby girl. Today, she is sharing all of the details on her beautiful baby shower along with some amazing local Phoenix vendors.
Two Sundays ago I had the baby shower of my dreams. The entire day was so magical. I felt unbelievably grateful having a group of some of the most special people in my life come out to celebrate me and baby!
I’ve been gone from the blogging world for a little over a year now and I’m going to play a little bit of catch up for those who may be out of the loop! If you follow me on Snapchat (@theposhteacher), you may have already seen some behind the scenes pictures from my shower. I’m excited to share more details about the special day along with some of the wonderful people and local companies who made it all possible!
I announced my pregnancy on my Snapchat in November. I cannot put into words how blessed and excited J and I feel to be welcoming our first child (a baby girl!) into the world in early April. The entire pregnancy has been one of the most remarkable and surreal experiences. Every time I feel her kick, look in the mirror and see my growing stomach, or even have a case of seriously bad heartburn I am reminded how incredible women’s bodies are and what we are capable of doing.
The Baby Shower
Almost immediately after telling my friends and family I was pregnant, I had people offer to help with my shower. I was so thankful to those who wanted to help alleviate some of my stress, but I didn’t want to have anyone be responsible for planning and taking on everything. For the venue and overall look of my shower, I had a very specific vision. I knew I wanted the shower to be at a home without anyone having to give up theirs. Spring is one of the most beautiful times of year in the Valley, so I wanted to use the natural beauty of the mountains as the backdrop for the shower. Rather than “traditional” decorations, I knew I wanted florals and garland to accent the Phoenix scenery.
The first thing I knew I needed to do was find a venue. The venue would set the tone for the shower and from there I would be able figure out specific details. Knowing I was looking for a large backyard and an open kitchen, I began my search. A few days into looking, I was introduced to Abdul, a property manager for AIR BNB in Phoenix. AIR BNB had several houses in Phoenix I could choose from, but after describing how I was hoping the day of my shower would look, Abdul showed me the perfect home. We could be telekinetic friends for life. It’s as if he went into my brain, saw everything I wanted, and came back with the house I had been imagining! A few days after speaking on the phone, I went on a tour of the property. Immediately after setting foot in the backyard I said, “This is it”! Abdul assured me he would take care of the majority of the big picture logistics for me including tables, chairs, set up, etc. He was completely understanding that this was obviously a busy time for me and wanted to take as much stress off of my plate as possible. I am so grateful for Abdul and his team. There is no way my dream would have come to fruition without them, the beautiful home, and all of their hard work leading up to and on the day of my shower. I cannot recommend this venue enough, whether it be for a weekend getaway or venue for an event. The house is spacious and the kitchen is a dream. There are two double doors from the kitchen that open up to the patio and outside area. The backyard has a spectacular view of Camelback Mountain, an open patio and grass area, and a gorgeous pool with a slide and swim up bar. Trust me when I say this mama will be going back to the house post baby to put that pool and bar to good use! 😉 It truly was everything I pictured.
The night before my shower, my dress for the big day, along with every other dress in my closet, decided it no longer wanted to fit. Thank goodness to my wonderful mother in law who asked me to try it on so she could see it! I have no idea what I would have done the next morning if she hadn’t said something. We spent that night at the mall in over nine stores before finally finding the perfect dress. The rock star team at the Fashion Square Nordstrom kept the store open 45 minutes late for me and after trying on every (literally every) dress they had, the last one fit! The morning of my shower, I was pretty anxious. It was hard for me to process that the day we had put so much work into was finally here and in a few hours I would be with some of my closest friends and family celebrating myself and baby girl. I knew the day would go by quickly and I internally had to take a step back a few times to remind myself to soak in and enjoy everything as much as I could. As I was opening gifts, I was holding back tears. Seeing all of the most precious little items that I would soon be using on the baby we’ve waited so long to meet was overwhelming in the absolute best way. By the end of the shower, I was a little misty. The whole day was 100% what I had pictured. There isn’t a single thing I would have wanted to happen or look differently. It was the most beautiful day.
My shower would not have been possible without the help of incredible local vendors and some truly genuine souls.
Chestnut Fine Foods: I have been a fan of Chestnut for a while now. They are local to the neighborhood we live in, so doing brunch there has become a weekend staple for us. My love for the restaurant grew even more when I had the pleasure of meeting the fabulous owner Kirsten at an event I attended in October where Chestnut was catering. Jules (who I went to that event with) and I met up to discuss my shower and when it came time to discuss who would cater, there were no other restaurants we mentioned. We knew it had to be Chestnut. A few days later I spoke to Kirsten and shared some details about my shower. I told her how it would be a garden theme and I wanted the food to be light, but I didn’t guests leaving absolutely starving. Girl was on it and told me she would send over some options that would fit well with the shower and we could create a menu from there. After going over the options, we put together the perfect complimentary menu to the shower. The food not only looked amazing, but everyone could not stop raving about how delicious it was! Kirsten was also so kind to provide gift cards to guests as party favors. I’ve already had multiple friends text me saying they’ve used their gift cards to try more food on the menu and are so thankful for finding this wonderful gem!
Valley Silk: As I mentioned, I wanted to stay away from standard baby shower decorations and I knew that the only details I wanted to complete the look of my shower were floral arrangements, garland, vines, and other traditional gardenesque pieces. If you know me, you know when I have something planned in my head, it is hard for me to let that go. Since the florals were going to make up the majority of the décor, I did not want to compromise on any last detail. I met with several florists and then came across the wonderful husband and wife team at Valley Silk. I know the word grateful has been so overused in this post, but my goodness, am I grateful our paths crossed. When I walked into their Mesa shop for our initial meeting, I was surprised by how large the store is and the variety of stock they offer. They had me describe to them what I was looking for and within minutes Lynn, was pulling florals and greenery to create arrangements for the different tables. While she was doing that, the husband was showing me how I could create even more of a garden look by adding different accent pieces and trees. By the end of our hour and a half meeting they had not only provided all the decorations for the shower, but given me such peace of mind with the rest of the planning process. I no longer had a single worry about the look of my shower as they so efficiently and graciously handled everything for me.
Layla Bean Cakery: At the same event Jules and I attended in October where we met Kirsten, Layla Bean had a spread of delicious desserts. Whether you know me in real life or via social media, it is no surprise when I say, girl loves to eat. I have no shame in my game when attending events parking it right next to the spread of food and calling it a night. I am glad I attended that specific event for many reasons, but one of the top reasons? I had the honor, yes-honor of trying Nicole’s (the owner of Layla Bean) to die for sugar cookies for the first time. I vowed that night after about my eight cookie, (that is no exaggeration) these would be at my baby shower. Friends, I wish so badly I could send a little sugar cookie love to each and every one of you, so you could taste how magical they are, and to also realize I’m not completely insane going on a rant about cookies. Nicole and I spoke on the phone about the details and the muted colors of my shower. Nothing over the top. All you have to do is look at the pictures of the spread Nicole put together to say, “Everything looks too pretty to eat!” Those words came out of I think every single guests’ mouth. But we did eat everything and had #noregrets – after we took about 1,000 pictures first of course! On the way home from the shower my mother in law said to me, “Do you think when we come back next month we can order some more of those cookies?” If she wants to slip me some in place of ice chips while in labor, we can order about six dozen more!
STAR Makeup: Since about mid-February, my entire closet no longer fits and I rarely have the energy to get ready and try to look decent. To be honest, that’s totally had an effect on me. I’ve felt like a different person compared to a few months ago when I would get ready most days of the week and could spend ten hours a day in skinny jeans and heels without thinking anything of it. Now trying to put tennis shoes on by myself requires too much energy, so the thought of doing anything other than throwing my hair up and putting some mascara on most days is the equivalent to me running a marathon. On the day of my shower, I knew I wanted to feel absolutely beautiful for that entire day – without having to put any of the work into making that happen myself! I didn’t have a specific look in mind other than something that would make it through the 95 degree heat for the day. I sent Star a few pictures, but knew I was in great and experienced hands, so I totally trusted her. The morning of the shower she arrived at my house and took a look at my outfit for the day. She went to work and I think could definitely sense I was a little anxious before the shower. Talking to her felt like two girlfriends catching up and she totally made me feel more relaxed which is exactly what I needed. I was blown away with the finished look. I love getting my makeup done, but for big events, especially my baby shower, I get nervous because if the final result isn’t what’s envisioned that can add way more stress. She was able to accomplish a stunning look and was extremely precise which made me feel so comfortable. It had been such a long time since I had felt that beautiful and I feel so thankful Star was able to achieve the look I was aiming for for my special day.
AIR BNB: I want to say thank you again to Abdul and his entire team for allowing me to throw the shower at the beautiful house. From the weeks leading up to the shower to that day, they made sure everything was set. Abdul made sure chairs as well as tables were provided and assisted the entire shower with last minute details, parking for guests, and making sure every last detail was in place!
I also want to express every ounce of gratitude to my wonderful hostesses Jules and Leah. Both ladies went above and beyond in every last way to make sure my shower was as exceptional and memorable as possible for me and Baby Emery! As I am sure you know by following her on social media, Jules is genuinely one of the most kind and caring souls I have ever met. She has gone from being my Instagram friend to one of my closet girlfriends. The night before my shower when my dress didn’t fit, Jules offered to run out to multiple stores to find one for me – see what I mean by genuine soul?! My best friend Leah is an art teacher and used her unbelievable talent to add so many wonderful touches to the shower. The “Dear Baby” and “Who Knows Mommy Best” cards – she designed. Guys, how big of a super star is she?! After getting home from the shower, one of the first things J and I did was read through all of the cards together. They made me smile, cry, and laugh and I am so grateful she was provided us with that memory we will be able to cherish forever and share with Emery. Both Jules and Leah are two of the go-to ladies in my life, but throughout the shower planning process they both totally outdid themselves. I would have lost my head without their help and baby and I are forever thankful for the both of you!
I also want to say thank you to everyone who took the time to spend your day celebrating baby and I! I was overcome with emotions that day and it was one of the most incredible feelings to be surrounded by so much love. A special thank you to my mother and father in law who flew in for the weekend to help us celebrate! And to all of my family and friends in both California and Ohio who sent texts, cards, and gifts and thought of us from afar. Seeing how loved our precious baby girl already is brings me more happiness than I will ever be able to express.
Putting this blog post together has been an incredible and nostalgic thing. It’s reminded me of how much I miss blogging. I hope to share more once baby girl decides to make her appearance hopefully in a few short weeks. In the meantime, you can stay updated by following along with the last of my pregnancy and journey into motherhood on Snapchat (@theposhteacher).
